Active Learning in Teams

Participants:

40 students in 1st-year biology.

Data collection:

Questionnaire and teacher observation.

Type of work:

The general structure of a cell was created in a collaborative concept space. Small teams of students were assigned to a particular part of the cell and were asked to learn and produce the knowledge for that part. Students presented their work to others, and the space was used to study the whole cell biology.

Results:

Most students liked the collaborative learning experience and found the organization visual and efficient. Many students asked for more guidance and reported bugs that needed to be solved.
